Pharmacological action

Karprofen is the most studied non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, analgesic and decongestant drug for dogs in the treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Carprofen inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase in the arachidonic acid cycle. In this case, the drug mainly affects cyclooxygenase-II, which is produced in response to inflammation. As a result, the synthesis of prostaglandins is blocked. In therapeutic doses, carprofen has a much weaker effect on cyclooxygenase-I, and due to this it does not significantly affect the synthesis of protective prostaglandins, the lack of which in the body can cause impaired renal function (slowing down renal blood flow), platelet aggregation, increased secretion of the glands of the stomach and intestines, impaired water-salt balance, cardiac activity and other functional disorders. The drug has anti-bradykinin activity, inhibiting the perception of pain at the level of the central parts of the brain and spinal cord. Carprofen is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and its concentration reaches a peak in blood plasma 1 to 3 hours after oral administration. The elimination half-life is about 10 hours. Carprofen is more than 99% bound to plasma proteins and metabolized in the liver, excreted in feces (about 80%) and urine. Rikarfa meat-flavored tablets, according to the degree of impact on the body of warm-blooded animals, are classified as moderately hazardous substances.
