xylometazoline (xylometazoline)

Pharmacological action

A vasoconstrictor for topical application in ENT practice. Alpha-adrenergic agonist.

When applied to the mucous membranes, it causes vasoconstriction, resulting in reduced local hyperemia and edema. With rhinitis, it facilitates nasal breathing.

Indications

Acute allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, hay fever, otitis media (to reduce swelling of the nasopharynx), preparing the patient for diagnostic procedures in the nasal passages.

Contraindications

Angle-closure glaucoma, atrophic rhinitis, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, severe atherosclerosis, hyperthyroidism, brain surgery (history), hypersensitivity to xylometazoline.

Special instructions

Do not use for a long time, for example, with chronic rhinitis. For colds in cases where crusts form in the nose, it is preferable to prescribe in the form of a gel.

Use in pediatrics

With caution, xylometazoline is prescribed for children under 2 years of age (gel - up to 7 years).

Dosage and administration

Apply topically for 7-14 days.

Dose depends on the dosage form used and the age of the patient.

Side effects

With frequent and / or prolonged use: irritation of the mucosa, burning, tingling, sneezing, dry nasal mucosa, hypersecretion.

Rarely: swelling of the nasal mucosa (more often with prolonged use), palpitations, heart rhythm disturbances, increased blood pressure, headache, vomiting, sleep disturbances, and visual impairment.

With prolonged use in high doses: depressed.
